Where do you stand on climate change?

Sana Rashid

We all know that as a planet, our mother earth is in trouble, as the habitants of the said planet we are in even more trouble. Every other day there is some or the other news related to the environment sending chills down our spine making us wonder “how much time do we really have?” “Are we already in the apocalyptic phase of it all?” and then a few days pass by and some of us just resume our regular lives with the regular amount of worry for the climate. Therefore, our subconscious is always worried but the intensity and the conscious effort we make to acknowledge that thought varies.

Hence, we need to figure out a way to make that concern a consistent part of our lives so that there is some amount of contribution from our end on a daily basis. A way to do that is resorting to education that is educating the ones around you and especially the ones that look up to you. Could be your little ones, the kids playing under your building or a subordinate at work because they will really care about what you have to say. Education is an essential part of the implementation process for anything. Making the cause as relevant as night and day is the need of the hour.

We listen to advocates of climate change such as Greta Thunberg and it pushes us to pay attention because there is a cry that we hear in those words, an emotion so deep rooted that it shakes us up. We inherited this land, air, water, weather, the greenery and more and we will pass it on but the question is “In what condition?”. Ask yourself this because if you are reading this blog, you are privileged! You are so lucky to have access to sources that enable you to make a difference.

Organisations such as UNESCO have been making waves with its initiatives to raise awareness amongst the younger generation, one such program being The UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network that is creating a structured network for students, teachers and experts on principles related to climate change.

In light of the above, it is safe to say that the the concerns for the future can be resolved or controlled by increasing the awareness of the ones inheriting the future.

As human beings, a considerable lot of us are quite impressionable, so when one is seen taking that step or making that conscious effort no matter how big or small, a domino effect begins leading to more such steps being taken contributing to the overall health of our environment.

Therefore, we have to remind ourselves every now and then to let that subconscious worry for the climate change take over so we constantly educate and implement. Because at the end of the day you need to be able to answer the most pressing question, which is:

When we do panic about the health of our planet what are we actually doing about it?
